New Scouts

Welcome to Troop 82!

Troop 82 is a large Scouting troop serving approximately 275-300 scouts each year, including 200 scouts in the fifth to eighth grades and 75-100 high school students working on their Eagle projects.  Since 2000, Troop 82 has produced on average 30 Eagle Scouts annually and has advanced 1,082 scouts to the Eagle rank since its first Eagle Scout in 1964.

We organize Troop 82 to provide personal attention and leadership opportunities to each incoming scout.  Troop 82 is comprised of five companies, each with its own Company Scoutmaster. Each company is then organized into patrols of six to nine middle school-aged boys.  Each scout has the opportunity to serve leadership positions in his patrol including Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Scribe.  The size of Troop 82 allows us to pool resources and parent volunteers to organize seven monthly campouts per year at beautiful ranches across North Texas.

While Troop 82 leaders wish to welcome everyone into scouting, we unfortunately must restrict the number of new scouts due to the size of our meeting facility and other program constraints.

Troop 82 leadership begins collecting applications for rising 5th grade boys in late spring through early summer each year. Troop 82 will also admit older scouts entering 6th and 7th grades on a case-by-case basis. Scouts starting after 5th grade must expend extra effort to catch up to the rank progression of peers their same age. The deadline for first round of applications is July 15th, or whenever the incoming class is full. Please be advised that the Troop Committee will begin meeting in early summer to make decisions regarding invitations to prospective candidates and often fill out the incoming scout class with the wave of early applicants. Please submit your application as soon as you can!

The Troop Committee considers a number of factors in evaluating prospective scouts including troop capacity, candidate accomplishments, character, commitment to Troop 82, legacy, and leadership. For further detail on the expectations of a Boy Scout, please see the Membership Standards outlined on the Boy Scouts of America website. The decision of the Troop Committee is final.

After the new scouts’ membership in Troop 82 has been formally approved, the family will be notified as soon as possible. There will be periodic communications over the Summer, but no action is required until August. At that time, you will be sent a link facilitating an official BSA application that is due on August 15. You will also be invited to an orientation meeting in late August or early September.
